Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month is observed during the month of October in the United States and in many other parts of the world. One in four pregnancies end in loss, one in 160 pregnancies that reach 20 weeks or beyond end in loss and 1 baby is born still at term for every 1000 live births. Being pregnant does not reduce the risk of experiencing domestic violence from a partner. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), approximately 324,000 pregnant women are abused each year in the United States (ACOG, 2012). One in six pregnant people experience domestic violence for the first time during a pregnancy. Intimate partner violence can contribute to poor pregnancy weight gain, infection, anemia, tobacco use, stillbirth, pelvic fracture, placental abruption, fetal injury, preterm delivery, and low birth weight.

This week the World Health Organization released a report on violence directed against women. The sad fact, simply stated, is that one in three women will experience physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner, or experience an act of sexual violence by someone who is not their partner. 769 million women will experience physical or sexual violence during their lifetime. This statistic has remained virtually unchanged for the past ten years.
During pregnancy or the postpartum period, incidences of domestic violence go up. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, one in six women who experience abuse will experience it for the first time during pregnancy.
