As Lamaze joins stakeholders, advocates, and policymakers in celebrating Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17, 2021), Lamaze educators, advocates, and parents can reflect on the progress made on raising awareness of maternal health disparities—and the actions taken to address them. With the Congressional Black Maternal Health Caucus’ (BMHC) and other policymakers’ leadership, vision, and collaboration, federal efforts to reduce maternal health disparities and shortfalls are no longer just talking points. Lamaze International is proud to endorse the Momnibus, a historic legislative package that the Black Maternal Health Caucus introduced on February 8, 2021. The Momnibus is a series of 12 bills that seek to improve U.S. maternal and childbirth outcomes and reduce maternal mortality and morbidity rates that disproportionately affect Black pregnant and birthing people.
Lamaze is especially pleased that many of the Momnibus bills would provide specific pathways to increase access to evidence-based childbirth education and to childbirth educators. The Lamaze advocacy team is also happy to announce that, for the first time, the package’s perinatal health worker definition includes childbirth educators.

Lamaze International is pleased to announce its support for the Congressional Black Maternal Health Caucus’ Momnibus that Caucus members introduced on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. The Momnibus is a package of nine bills that each implement specific measures to promote maternity care for women disproportionately affected by maternal mortality and morbidity, and who have poorer childbirth outcomes than the national average. These bills build upon existing legislation that seeks to extend Medicaid coverage to 12 months postpartum, increase access to birth and health centers for underserved populations, and develop maternity care quality standards and supports maternity care collaboratives.
