October is Safe Sleep and SIDS Awareness Month. These important topics are not just mentioned in October should be routinely discussed in childbirth education classes, as expectant parents need access to evidence based information that helps prevent infant mobility and mortality. The Safe to Sleep campaign, from the National Institutes of Health has an extremely robust and generous website jam-packed with activities, resources, videos, graphics, social media content and more for you to access, use and share with the families you work with. This information is available in both English and Spanish.

Just recently, major on-line retailers Amazon and eBay pulled all the inclined infant sleeper products for sale from their websites, upon receiving a letter recommending this action from Consumer Reports that proceeds an expected ruling from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

A new category of products that create a false sense of security with parents of infants and has been linked to infant deaths. “In-bed sleepers” are being used by parents who want to “safely bed-share” in order to facilitate easier nighttime feedings and comfort for their babies. Examples of popular brands of these products include “DockATot,” “Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Infant Sleeper.” and “SwaddleMe By Your Side Sleeper” which have all been linked to fatalities by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). It is extremely helpful to be able to demonstrate visually what safe bed-sharing looks like during the portion of the class where infant sleep is covered. Thankfully, there are now resources that educators and other professionals can turn to for examples of safe bed-sharing.
