November 17 was World Prematurity Day, a time to spread information on how prematurity affects babies, parents, and families, and how it can be prevented. This year, to call attention to this important concern and seize on the recent elections and newly elected lawmakers, perinatal professionals and parents are encouraged to join March of Dimes' "Mamagenda" in support of #BlanketChange, a campaign that urges US lawmakers to pass legislation that improves health care equity and access, and outcomes for parents and babies, including the prevention of prematurity. The current preterm birth rate is 10.5 percent -- the highest ever reported by March of Dimes.

There is a new Cochrane Review that was published earlier this week "Omega-3 fatty acid addition during pregnancy" that determined that increasing the intake of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) during pregnancy reduces the risk of premature births.

A small but very positive study just released has demonstrated the ability to determine gestational age with a blood test as accurately as early ultrasound. Subsequent blood tests during the pregnancy appear to be accurate in determining who is at risk of delivering prematurely.

Every November our focus turns to prematurity and Prematurity Awareness Month. In particular, November 17th (tomorrow) is Prematurity Awareness Day. For the second year in a row, the rate of babies born prematurely has risen and is now at 9.8% for 2016, up from 9.6 % in 2015.
