The New Yorker and the Retro Report created a new short film, “Bearing the Burden: Black Mothers in America,” that discusses how health care providers are returning to the midwife to meet the maternity care needs of Black people who are growing their families. A century ago, Granny Midwives were responsible for the majority of births of Black families and poor white families. Doctors created unwarranted concerns about the safety practices and skill levels of the Black midwives and forced them to stop practicing. “Can Midwives Bridge the Gap?” Is the accompanying article that goes along with the documentary.

Today is the International Day of the Midwife. Midwives practice around the world and are the perfect health care provider to provide care for healthy, low risk families during the childbearing year. In many circumstances, midwives also provide well-person care reproductive care such as contraception, screening and diagnostic testing, and with guidance through puberty and menopause as well.

In the United States, September 29th through October 5th is National Midwifery Week. This recognition week was created by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) in order to celebrate and recognize midwives and midwife-led care. The 2019 theme is "Midwifery is the Answer!"

This new research: Giving Voice to Mothers: A national survey of the experiences of care during and after pregnancy and childbirth in the US focused on the experiences of birthing women of color who were planning to birth out of the hospital, defined as “community births”. These community births were planned to occur in either a freestanding birth center or at home. The demographics of these two group (people of color and community births) are traditionally underrepresented in past research projects focused on personal experiences, such as the Listening to Mothers studies did.

This past weekend I attended the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) annual conference; Birthing Social Change in Portland, OR. The conference was attended by more than 300 midwives and their supporters. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of general sessions and the concurrents I attended.
