Giving Tuesday: How to Help Mothers, Parents, and Babies

Cara Terreri, LCCE, CD(DONA)

Today is "Giving Tuesday," a day designated to benefit organizations that help the greater good -- and a great way to end on a high note of giving back after all the shelling out on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.

In honor of the day and the Lamaze mission to advance safe and healthy pregnancy, birth and early parenting, I wanted to provide a short list of global organizations that are doing amazing things to help improve the care for mothers/parents and babies. As you ponder where to donate today, I hope you will consider one of the deserving organizations below.

Nonprofit Organizations that Help Improve the Lives of Mothers, Parents, and Babies

Every Mother Counts

"We envision a world where all women have the opportunity to enter motherhood and not only survive, but thrive."

Every Mother Counts works to achieve quality, respectful, and equitable maternity care for all by giving grants and working with partners and thought leaders to increase awareness and mobilize communities to take action.

Black Women's Health Imperative

"Since 1983, we have been the only national organization dedicated solely to improving the health and wellness of our nation’s 21 million Black women and girls – physically, emotionally and financially."

Black Women's Health Imperative's mission is to lead the effort to solve the most pressing health issues that affect Black women and girls in the United States through bold new programs and advocating for health-promoting policies.

National Birth Equity Collaborative

"Our vision is that every Black infant will celebrate a healthy first birthday."

The National Birth Equity Collective (NBEC) aims to reduce Black maternal and infant mortality through research, family-centered collaboration, and advocacy.

Family Care International - Management Sciences for Health

"A world where everyone has the opportunity for a healthy life."

The FCI Program of MSH raises a powerful advocacy voice for the health and rights of women and communities. At global forums and in a range of countries, the FCI Program engages in evidence-based, constructive activism to build political commitment, develop progressive policies, foster accountability and mobilize increased funding for programs that improve women’s, newborns’ and adolescents’ health.

CARE

"We seek a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and all people live with dignity and security."

CARE works around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice. They put women and girls in the center because poverty cannot be overcome until all people have equal rights and opportunities.

Lamaze International

"Our vision is 'knowledgeable parents making informed decisions.'"

Lamaze works to advance safe and healthy pregnancy, birth, and early parenting by providing evidence-based education and advocating for improvements in care and outcomes for mothers and babies.

In addition to making direct donations to support Lamaze, you can also support the important work we do through your everyday shopping needs at Amazon, or by purchasing from our organic baby clothing line, developmental Lamaze baby toys, or maternity intimate apparel. Learn more!

Of course, these are just a small sample of the organizations around the world that are helping families survive and thrive. I encourage you to find an organization in your area that is helping mothers, parents, and babies locally -- donating funds to these organizations is a great way to directly give back to those in need in your community. Happy Giving Tuesday!
