First Birth as Doula

I'm attending my first birth ever in a few weeks. I'm really nervous and not sure if I can handle the intensity and energy. I worry that I won't be able to perform my duties as a doula...or remember what to do. Any suggestions? I know birth is natural and healthy, but never having seen one, I still have some inhibitions to overcome.

Doula work is basically defined as "mothering the mother," which I would expand to looking after her partner and any other friends and family they have with them at the labor. In other words, it isn't that difficult. If you have children of your own, you pretty much have the skills and experience you need, and even if you don't have children, I would be willing to bet that liking to nurture people is one of the things that drew you to this work. As for how to take care of yourself, here are some suggestions:
Any doulas out there with additional suggestions? Feel free to chime in. Let us know how it went. -- Henci |

No other suggestions, but just a reminder: trust birth! You give your client the positive energy she needs that way.

If there is no digital camera in the room and you have a camera on your phone, use it. It was especially useful recently when the Mom had a c section and everyone was getting ready to take the baby to the nursery. I snapped some pictures of the baby so I could show them to the Mom while they were stitching her up. Another time when the visitors were limited and both sets of first time grandparents had to take turns. I softened the blow to the ones who got 2nd viewing by showing the pictures I had takekn with the camera on my phone. Linda B. Jenkins www.birthprep.com
