Hi Henci,

I have just learned today that I have an anterior placenta (it's not low lying, though) and I'm worried that my previous c-section scar may cause problems during labour/delivery. I stupidly looked this up on the Internet and came across some frightening information about hemorraging during birth if the placenta is attached to my scar, etc. Is there anything I should be concerned about? I am planning a home VBAC with a midwife and I'm concerned that this may not be (physically) possible with an anterior placenta.

I'm in the UK, if that has any impact on your response. Thank you so much!

ElleDee,
How far along are you? If this is an early sonogram, know that the placenta will move up. Anyway, I am not Henci, nor am I an expert, but I like researching these things so I might get back to you.

Unless the circumstances of your cesarean were unusual, the scar on your uterus is low and transverse (goes from side to side) as that has been the standard for decades now all over the world. Therefore, if the placenta is, as you say, not low lying, you can stop worrying that it is involved with the scar.

Hi Maria - I'm just over 18 weeks along now. I understand what you're saying - thanks!

Thank you, Henci. I appreciate the reassurance! By: ElleDee

Well, that was a moment of insanity on my part. Of course a placenta moves up as the uterus stretches, so if it is over the scar, it would not move past it...

But you said your placenta is not low lying. So far it seems to be a conscensus among experienced midwives practicing natural childbirth that the only foreseeable challenge you might have during labor and delivery is a higher chance for a posterior baby, with the longer labor/back labor that comes with it.

Most women give birth to a posterior baby naturally just fine.
