Dearest Henci,
I need your help. In preparation for my vbac, I interviewed an ob who told me I had to progress 1 cm per hour or I'd be cut again. I asked for studies, but she didn't have any. I went on to vbac fine, but I keep hearing this from other moms from their ob's or mw's......I would love to understand the data, bc I would really like to see what the risks are. I understand that most labors (not just vbac) are put on a time clock too. Is this grounded in research (I think not).

You are quite right. This ob couldn't produce any studies because no data support this policy. This is an example of what I call the "Cinderella VBAC": "Yes, you can have a VBAC provided you go into labor by your due date, the baby isn't too big, you progress at 1 cm per hour, . . ." You get the picture. As has been said, "You can always find a reason not to do something you don't want to do." I'm glad you were able to have a VBAC despite this ob.

Good for you for voting with your feet! It is hard, but it is usually better if at all possible to find a care provider whose practices and policies fit with what you want than to stay with someone who isn't a good fit for you and hope to get him or her to see it your way.
