Hi,

I gave birth to my son 9 weeks ago and I am still passing products of conception. I was told by my midwife that I had a ragged membrane and to be aware of possible infection. Although I do not think I have developed an infection I passed parts of membrane four times around 3 weeks post partum, twice at seven weeks post partum and again on numerous occassions yesterday at nine weeks post partum. I went to A & E last night where a doctor confirmed I had again passed more products of conception.  I have a pelvic ultra sound in two days time. Should I demand they also carry out a D & C? Although this is my first pregnancy, I am pretty sure this is abnormal. I was wondering why has this happened and what is the liklihood of this occuring in future pregnancies?

I apologize for not getting back sooner. I have been away--not that I can be of much help now that I am back. I am not a clinician, and I concentrate on reading the research that has to do with how normal birth is typically handled (but shouldn't be).

All I can say is that it sure sounds to me like something is wrong, but what it is or what should be done about it or whether it might occur after another birth is out of my league. I don't know as you should "demand" any particular treatment until you have more information. What I would demand, if I were you, is someone to sit down with me and take the time to talk to me about whether what is going on is abnormal, what might be causing it if it is, what risks, if any, it poses, what my options for treatment are, and the pros and cons of those options, including continuing to wait it out.
