Henci,
Have you heard anything about this?

Women of America about to be unwitting science experiments again? Nice...
WHY can't we just let labor begin on its own?!

In answer to your questions:
No, I hadn't heard about it. It sounds really painful and unpleasant, and heaven alone knows what the side-effects of softening connective tissue in this ham-handed way might be. One theory about why misoprostol (Cytotec) leads to uterine scar rupture is that it softens the connective tissue that makes up the scar.
We could let labor begin on its own 90% of the time, but induction has such great economic benefits for hospitals (more predictable staffing) and care providers (convenience).
Is there space on that wall for me?

There's always room on my wall for you, Henci. LOL
I am considering if I should add a Lamaze certification to my repertoire and go try to get hired to teach CBE at hospitals too. I am CAPPA certified now, and teach independently... but I am wondering if I ought to try and infiltrate some evidence-based teaching into the hospital system here where I live. Wonder how many class sessions I could teach before I was fired and blackballed for giving too much information and not towing the company line? (Enough to pay for my several hundred dollars in pursuing the Lamaze cert? I'd someday like to show a profit, but breaking even might be worth it if I reached some people or effected some change before I was out on my ear... LOL)
Sigh. We have hospitals with c/s rates over 40%, epidural rate 98%, induction- who knows, probably more than half though I don't have proof of that, only hearsay and observation... The emperor is wearing no clothes!!
Anyway, I am still plugging away down here, fighting the good fight. Let me know if anyone actually decides to do a study on this practice and you hear about it, so I will have more information to give my clients...
Oh, and do you think you will you be doing an update on TTWGTABB to update statistics, etc. anytime soon?
