Dear Henci,
I am an AAMI student who has chosen "evaluating research" as one of my specialties. I find your work very useful and readable, and am hoping that perhaps you can offer some direction to exploring this subject more deeply. I am planning on enrolling in some university courses, but as I wait for funding to do so, am looking for outside reading material. Could you recommend material that you have found beneficial? I appreciate any direction that you can offer. Thanks.

Welcome to the club! Here are some books I recommend: My top pick:

How to Read a Paper: The Basics of Evidence-Based Medicine by Trisha Greenhalgh

I don't know why it is, but the Brits just seem to write better than Americans.

Then there is:

Users' Guides to the Medical Literature: Essentials of Evidence-Based Clinical Practice edited by Gordon Guyatt and Drummond Rennie

This is a collection of papers published in JAMA.

Finally, I recommend:

Evidence-Based Medicine: How to Practice and Teach EBM by E. Straus, W. Scott Richardson, Paul Glasziou, and R. Brian Haynes

I'm sure there are others, but these should keep you busy for awhile. Happy reading!
