Support in Labor Increases Positive Birth Outcomes for Women

WASHINGTON (April 28, 2009)—For pregnant women who want a shorter labor that is likely to have fewer complications, a doula just may be the answer. Research indicates that, in childbirth, a woman feels better when supported by people she trusts and those who use encouragement. Therefore, Lamaze International recommends that women bring a loved one, friend or doula for continuous support during childbirth.

A doula is a trained professional who emotionally and physically supports a laboring woman. With the sole intent to help create a positive birth experience, a doula’s presence reinforces that no woman has to labor on her own.

Doulas offer a variety of services during childbirth. Once labor begins, their expert advice and reassurance reinforces a woman’s self-confidence that her body is perfectly designed to birth a baby. Doulas also can help a laboring woman communicate her preferences to others, allowing the woman to relax and concentrate on laboring.

Women who have support, including a doula, are likely to have fewer interventions, such as labor induction or cesarean surgery. Research shows that women supported by doulas request pain medication less frequently and report greater satisfaction with the birth and their partner’s participation.

“My birth experience was wonderful. With a supportive team of caring people by my side, I felt exhilarated. Giving birth was no longer about fear, but about a shared experience where I never felt like I was in it alone,” said mother Yuki Peete.

As part of its Healthy Birth Practices, Lamaze International recommends that women bring a loved one, friend or doula for continuous support while they labor. Many Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators are also doulas, and the Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator Locator Directory helps families locate a childbirth educator who may offer doula services in their area.

The Lamaze: Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond site offers a free tip sheet for expecting families that explains how the right support person can be integral to ensuring a positive birth experience. Another resource is the free Lamaze…Building Confidence Week by Weeke-mail series that guides expecting families through the development of their baby while preparing them for what to expect during labor.
