Pathways to Childbirth Education Certification

Lamaze International offers the only recognized childbirth education certification accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). NCCA is at the forefront of accrediting programs around the country and setting quality standard for credentialing organizations, including those in the filed of childbirth education.

For nearly 50 years, Lamaze International has been the leading provider of education programs that teach healthy birth practices and prepare educators to teach childbirth education with skill and confidence. Certification by Lamaze International is the most respected and recognized credential in childbirth education certification.

The LCCE credential is recognized as a professional certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as part of the Magnet Recognition Program for healthcare organizations.  Lamaze International offers the only credential for childbirth educators attaining certification through a variety of educational and experiential backgrounds.

Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator Certification Requirements

In order to become a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE), a candidate must complete one of three LCCE pathways and pass the LCCE certification exam.

LCCE Exam Costs
$250 for Lamaze Members
$380 for nonmembers in the United States.

Additional certification costs, depending on your LCCE pathway, could include Lamaze Accredited Childbirth Education Program Seminar fees, The Lamaze Study Guide, the Exam Prep Course and the Lamaze Learning Modules.

Three LCCE Pathways to Childbirth Educator Certification

Pathway 1: for those new to the childbirth education field
Pathway 2: for experienced childbirth educators (health professionals such as RNs, PTs, and MDs)
Pathway 3: for Midwives or Midwifery students.

Pathway 1: You Are New to the Childbirth Education Field

New Mother & Childbirth Educator

1.    Provide documentation of successful completion of a Lamaze Accredited Childbirth Education Program Seminar and self-study from Lamaze Study Guide. Candidates must sit for the exam within three years of completing the seminar.
2.    Provide documentation of childbirth education practice LCCE teaching experience with a mentor/observer.  Practice teaching may be achieved in a variety of ways, including practice teaching approved by a Lamaze Program Director or another childbirth educator mentor.

OR

1.    Provide documentation of successful completion of a formal course on teaching childbirth education (i.e. ICEA, Bradley, Birthing from Within, Birth Works, CAPPA, Childbirth International).
2.    Provide documentation of childbirth education practice LCCE teaching experience with a mentor/observer.  Practice teaching may be achieved in a variety of ways, including practice teaching approved by a Lamaze Program Director or other childbirth educator mentor.
3.    Provide documentation of 25 contact hours of continuing education in the past three years (continuing education must be in addition to formal course and directly related to the Lamaze Childbirth Educator competencies that promote natural birth, safe labor and delivery, healthy pregnancy, breastfeeding, early parenting, and the six Lamaze Healthy Birth Practices) OR completion of the 4 Lamaze Childbirth Education Learning modules.
