Breastfeeding is natural and simple, but support and understanding are essential for women to be successful with breastfeeding in today’s world. Encouragement from family, friends and health care professionals can mean the difference between a woman continuing to breastfeed her baby or giving up. This program is designed to strengthen the participants' ability to provide breastfeeding mothers with support, build confidence, assist with problem solving, and enhance skills. On the second day of the workshop, Lamaze offers the opportunity to work hands-on with breastfeeding dyads.

The benefits of breastfeeding include:

  • Decrease illness and infectious disease in children.
  • Enhanced cognitive development in children.
  • Decreased number of sick days used by working mothers.
  • Decreased breast and reproductive cancers in women.

A certificate of completion does not imply certification as a lactation consultant. Continuing ducation credits for this workshop can be used to satisfy some, but not all, requirements for certification as a lactation consultant.

Who should attend?
The Lamaze Breastfeeding Support Specialist workshop is designed for those individuals who wish to improve their ability to enhance the initiation and duration of breastfeeding, including:

  • Childbirth and breastfeeding educators
  • Maternal-child nurses
  • Dietitians and nutritionists
