CORE VALUES FOR TEACHING SAFE AND HEALTHY BIRTH:
The Lamaze Philosophy of Birth is based on evidence and the idea that birth is a natural part of life. By educating parents, you are helping them understand, respect and trust the natural processes of pregnancy and childbirth, leading to better outcomes for everyone. This module will define the Lamaze philosophy of birth and the ways in which you can empower women to make informed choices in maternity care.

- Describe the maternal attributes associated with positive birth memories.
- Identify the ways in which the body naturally deals with the pain of labor.
- Outline the thought processes as labor progresses.

Standards of Practive & Ethics in Childbirth Education
The Code of Ethics for Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators outlines the ethical principles and standards that are derived from childbirth education’s core values to assure quality and ethical practice. This module defines Lamaze International’s Code of Ethics for LCCE Educators and addresses current ethical and moral issues that childbirth educators should be prepared to encounter in maternity care.
Participants will be able to:
- Define ethical and professional standards of the LCCE educator as it pertains to Lamaze International’s Code of Ethics for Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators.
- Identify the challenges the childbirth educator experiences while practicing in the current maternity-care environment.
- Describe the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services’ investigation of the breakdown of informed consent in maternity care.
- Discuss current ethical issues associated with childbirth in the United States.
- Identify moral distress among childbirth educators.

- Investigate the issues of transparency in modern maternity care.
- Demonstrate how the Lamaze Healthy Birth Practices can be incorporated into Childbirth Education teaching models.

Childbirth Education Teaching Skills
There are changing goals and contemporary challenges facing childbirth education today. This module identifies the ways in which Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators can identify women’s beliefs about safe and healthy birth and how they can incorporate the right teaching skills into their Childbirth Education classes that will promote a new model of educating and building women’s confidence to make safe and healthy choices.
Participants will be able to:
- Identify women’s beliefs about safe, healthy birth.
- Recognize specific teaching strategies that can be easily incorporated into a curriculum to enhance maternal confidence in anticipation of birth.
- Use persuasion as a way to change women’s ideas about safe, healthy birth.
- Identify models of childbirth education that are most likely to create change in the maternity care system.
